What gadget will you buy in 2008?

One Laptop Per ChildI posed this question to the LinkedIn community recently, asking not only what gadget they plan to buy in 2008 but any technology - covering add-on hardware, software, applications, paid subscriptions to e-mags/ podcasts/ other web resources etc.

The result: No clear winners but the iPhone, a laptop under the One-Laptop-Per-Child program and the Amazon’s book reader Kindle seem to be highly favoured. More of what others are planning to buy are given in the comments.
Any interesting answers? From US based writer and consultant Christopher Richards: “More SumoGrip mechanical pencils with 0.9 soft leads, and Moleskine 5 x 81/4 notebooks. I just love p.a.p.e.r technology. It requires no electricity. It is interactive, bug-free, fully searchable, re-writable, and portable. Oh yes, and no license fee! I recommend this technology.”

What are you planning to buy?

I will be investing in a good Home Theater. To Start with I am planning to buy a Yamaha AV Receiver(particular model), which will cost me about 18 - 19,000 INR and to complement that a pair of Floorstanding speakers from Mordaunt Short and that will cost me around 17 to 18,000 INR.

I will definitely buy an iPhone in 2008. I need to replace my iPod and my phone, but want to wait until they have a device that supports the AT&T 3G Network.

On a personal basis I will be using a media server early in the new year to provide photo, music and DVD distribution through my home. I have the hardware and will be installing it over the end of year break. I am using a solution called iDyl but there are many other options. Along with a very intelligent Pronto TSU9600 remote control from Philips, this shall form the foundation of my home entertainment network.

I shall also be using lots more fully integrated control solutions in my work, providing single points of access to home automation and entertainment features for my residential clients. I expect to use AMX and CUE control systems alot more.

I’ve already gotten my iPhone so that’s out of the picture. How about the Kindle :) Just kidding! I’m waiting for the much awaited 12″ Macbook that’s suspected to be in the works. That’s something I’d love to purchase.

I’ll be getting an XO laptop (http://www.laptop.org/) by taking part in the One Laptop per Child “Give One, Get One” program (http://laptopgiving.org/en/index.php) for US$399. Above and beyond the warm feeling that comes from donating a laptop to a child in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti, Mongolia or Rwanda, I’ll be getting my hands on an incredibly cool piece of tech from the folks at the MIT Media Lab. Sure my wife (a professional medical writer and PHD candidate in Public Health) may be interested in contributing some pro bono community health content development, but don’t the specs (http://www.laptop.org/en/laptop/hardware/specs.shtml) make this convertible, durable, ultra-low power consumption laptop with innovative software interface look like something you just want to power up (with a pull-cord generator) and mess around with?

    i) First a decent Phone I need. Would prefer if we can get iPhone in India. I heard Safari browser works great on iPhone, and that would make me ‘always online’.
(ii) If not iPhone, then surely I need iPod Touch. It is hundred times better than iPod Nano which I currently own.

Kindle is going to be my first preference, as soon as it is available, In fact I wanted it for Christmas but unfortunately it’s out of stock. Although a little bit on higher side ($ 399), if it is worth spending that money .LinkedIn Pro subscription is going to be the next thing on the list.

I want to buy a laptop, but I haven’t made up my mind on the specs yet. Also, an iPod. No iPhone for me. Actually, I want to stop using cell phones!

I am seriously contemplating busing one of those Asus Laptops - what can be cooler than flash memory, Linux OS, WiFi connectivity in a package that is sub $400?

I am also thinking of ‘jailbreaking’ my 8GB iPhone and getting it operational .. it is still shrink-wrapped :-)

  14. Lisa Davis on December 17th, 2007 10:40 pm

    1) an iPhone, hands down, especially if they can increase the flash memory beyond 8GB and somewhere closer to my video iPod capacity;

    2) an OLCP laptop–I think the world underestimates how this one product will revolutionize learning, education, networking, emerging economies, and distribution of human research and knowledge to the world at large; the effect may not be immediate and won’t capture as much press attention, but it will happen

I’m seriously thinking about buying the new Nokia N95 8GB version instead of my old Nokia 6680.

When the iPhone finaly comes out in Denmark where I live it will be hopelessly outdated. Well, compared to the N95 it was outdated technology wise from day 1 :-)

I have just bought a Pertelian information device from ThinkGeek. I use it to keep tabs on my servers to ensure they are up.
Other than that I am seriously thinking of buying a mobile phone with builtin GPS and navigation software such as the Nokia N95.

I’m definitely planning to buy a Panasonic Toughbook laptop. I haven’t decided which model yet, but this range of notebooks is really attractive. I have a “thing” for sturdy construction, and it has always irked me that mass-marketed electronics are not built better than they are. A friend of mine who lives in a country which builds a lot of laptops (I’ll waive mentioning that country’s name) states that she knows for sure that most laptops these days are consciously built with “planned obsolescence” in mind… that is, they are built to fall apart — all too easily. That’s not a slam against her country’s manufacturing ethic; it should be noted that many, if not most, of the companies which ply such inferior products have boards of directors, or at least marketing departments, which are firmly rooted in the U.S. market.

By contrast, the Panasonic Toughbook line seems to be what the Windows-based laptop should always have been, but never was. An object that you can actually drop from your desk, or spill some coffee on, and be confident that it will work just as well as before. That’s why they’ve sold me on the idea… now I just have to decide which one of their models to buy!
