The name of the game is networking, but not after work at the bar. Your keyboard kickstarts the process. And the best place in the virtual world to do so is at LinkedIn.com, the 14 million plus professional networking site.

If you do not have an account on LinkedIn, or have one but do not know how to get the best out of it, click here to read a piece written by me for Mint, a leading business daily published in India in an exclusive partnership with The Wall Street Journal.

White Paper: And if you would like to read the same in even more detail, you may want to read a white paper written by me titled ‘Ten ways to get LinkedIn to work for you‘.

Feel free to download it and post your comments or feedback. (The timestamp of this post has been changed to Sep 29 after the piece came out in Mint. Some comments may thus be dated before Sep 29.)

    Wow Ajay,

Another fine article written in a very engaging manner. I have to decide now which is my favorite, E-Screening or this one!!!!!!

    Keep going!

I think your paper hits the essence of LinkedIn it is for managers and executives. Those of us who have been left behind in Bush’s jobless recovery are left out of the matrix, disenfranchising, impersonalized, and ignored. I ran into this the other day on LinkedIn. Truth is that service is all about serving the current “executive” class, and the rest of the population need not apply.

Ajay, I must congratulate for your excellent work on LinkedIn. It will surely help millions of people to use LInkedin more effectively.

    Ajay,

Excellent white paper on Linked In. It covers all bases and reads true. I plan on sharing it with others to educate them on how to effectively use Linked In.

Neat white paper, Ajay. There is lot of scope for improvement at LinkedIn, but purely from a networking perspective, I think this is an amazing resource. Especially the Answers feature. Could benefit quite a bit from some of the Web 2.0 stuff out there, but quite nice, nevertheless.

I was lured to LinkedIn by a friend and quickly tried to spread it in my industry (construction - notoriously not too tech savvy) and have built a good network. You’ve covered well all the reasons why I’m pushing it.

I briefly went through the white paper and liked it. I seemed to know a lot of it already but it is a very good primer for newbies.

This was an interesting read — thanks!

You may want to look at some pre-published discussions about LinkedIn from some of the “big” bloggers (Guy Kawasaki, Dean Takahashi, etc.) — your re-treading some of the same “ten topics”.

I found your white paper to be very helpful for a couple reasons. One, it was comprehensive and allowed people who use LinkedIn to consider additional uses. Also, it was clearly written and enabled non-techies to follow along. As a follow-up to my quote featured in the article, the attorney candidate I presented now has an interview- all because of a contact I made on LinkedIn!

Sorry I haven’t replied yet to your questionnaire for the book, but the white paper is great.

    Keep up the good work.

Nicely written Ajay, you have a lot of great information in there!

One recommendation: The blue/red colors that you use to highlight the quotes are a bit bold on the eyes to read, I would recommend neutral colors so it doesn’t strain the eyes as much.

Excellent work, looking forward to reading the book!

    Good Job!

    Hi Ajay,

White Paper is fantastic. Well informative and comprehensive one!!!

My favourite section is Linkedin Answers section. If you could have elaborate more on last point (limit of 10 questions per month, How can a person gets best/Good tag for answers, etc), i.e LinkenIn Answers, it would have more informative for many people.

    Thanks…

I thought that was a very helpful paper, Ajay. It will be a very good resource as I continue to use LinkedIn.

Way to go… and well written.

    Hi,
Thank you for this free white paper full of good tips.
I have never thought of LI’s profile as a sort of wiki!
I see it more as a way of establishing our personal brand.
    A tip the hat!
