Why corporate India needs to be under the Mac spell

Even as Apple releases a new version of the iMac, it is perhaps time that corporate India took a closer look at the business benefits offered by the Mac platform.
The Mac may be one of the most admired computers all over the world, but it has been unable to make its presence felt in corporate circles. While many individual CEOs or executives possess Macs (generally notebooks), rare is the company that runs all its operations on the Mac platform, unless it is an advertising or design outfit.
This is more so the case in India, where the Mac is treated as something that is either only a good-looking computer or is meant mainly for designers or for high-end multimedia functions. Which, of course, is a total myth. The fact is that a Mac computer is perfectly capable of doing everything that a Windows computer does. And that’s not all, the Mac offers some significant benefits over Windows computers. Perhaps the most relevant of these for corporate users is the fact that Macs are far more secure than their Windows counterparts – fewer viruses exist for the Mac as compared to Windows. Mac desktops are also easier to set-up (there are hardly any wires) as compared to Windows PCs. And with the introduction of Bootcamp year, Macs can now also run Windows and Windows applications without any problems.
And that is just scratching the surface. About.com has an excellent article on how Macs can fit into a business environment here. Those looking for a comparison between Windows and Mac computers can visit Apple’s ‘Get a Mac’ section. A more objective comparison comes from Computerworld here which begins with the rather dramatic introductory sentence: “Everybody knows PCs are cheaper than Macs, right? Wrong! (At least sometimes.)” And for even more information on how a PC compares with a Mac, one can always return to About.com’s PC vs Mac section.
Perhaps it is time that Apple tried to make corporate India aware of the edge a Mac holds over a PC. We are not saying that a Mac is always better than a PC. Just that it merits consideration when one is shopping for a computer. - Contributed by Nimish Dubey
